On November 2, a special event will take place – the theatrical performance “Azovstal. The Voices,” dedicated to the Ukrainian defenders of “Azovstal,” who have been in captivity for 800 days. The event is organized in collaboration with the international art project “Mariupol – Unbreakable,” which highlights the resilience of Ukrainian heroes and reminds the world of the ongoing fight of the Ukrainian people.

“Azovstal. The Voices” is a unique theatrical project created by independent Kyiv artists (now NGO “Voices”) in the summer of 2022. The performance aims to draw attention to the important issue of Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Russian captivity and to counter enemy propaganda through artistic means.

The key objectives of the project include:

Spreading information about human rights violations and the conditions of Ukrainian military personnel in captivity.
Promoting an inclusive understanding of national identity and combating disinformation narratives.
Strengthening citizens’ resilience to propaganda through cultural products.
Organizing public campaigns to raise awareness about the difficult situation of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

This cultural event is an important element in the struggle for Ukraine’s informational independence and strengthens international support for our defenders, who are not only fighting on the battlefield but also enduring harsh conditions in captivity.

International project “Mariupol Unbroken” 2.11.2024

On November 2 at 6:00 PM, a special event will take place at the Dovzhenko Center (Vasylkivska St, 1), bringing together two significant cultural moments. Before the performance of “Azovstal. Voices,” which deeply explores the defense of Mariupol, guests will have the opportunity to visit the art exhibition “Mariupol Unbroken.”

This project, launched in June last year, is the first to present the culture of Mariupol. Over the past year, the artworks have been exhibited across Europe. Today, the exhibition features the works of 38 artists from across Ukraine, showcasing over 50 pieces. The paintings, created in various styles, are united by their support for Mariupol—dedicated either to the city itself or to the concept of unbreakable spirit as a phenomenon.

The exhibition presents paintings symbolizing and documenting the moral strength, defiance, and love for the homeland that cannot be broken by the horrors of war. The styles range from realism and academicism to cubism and postmodernism.

Through visual art, the artists invite viewers to reflect deeply on our present tragic reality. However, it is through this tragedy that we must find our way to the joy of victory. When the global community, alongside Ukrainians, celebrates that day, these works will hold their rightful place in the history of our struggle—a place that will physically be reflected in museums and galleries, but most importantly, in our hearts.

The main goal of the “Mariupol Unbroken” exhibition is to show the world, through art, the unbreakable spirit of Mariupol and to support the city’s lost artistic heritage. Artists from Mariupol’s branch of the National Union of Artists, as well as from across Ukraine and abroad, have united in a shared desire to help revive the city after de-occupation, restoring its beauty and faith in resilience.

The initiator and curator of the project is Valeriy Yurychkovskyi.

Grant from the Goethe-Institut

We are excited to share wonderful news! Our team has received a grant from the Goethe-Institut for an artistic residency in Berlin! Together with our German partners from “Hotel Continental – Art Space in Exile”
we are creating a unique theatrical performance titled “Fog.”

“The Fog. Chronicles of a Victory Yet to Come” is not just a theatrical performance, but a deep and touching artistic canvas that transports the audience into the heart of the most challenging times of war. It consists of 25 separate stories filled with pain, struggle, loss, and at the same time, hope for freedom and a future victory.

These 25 stories, like the 25 regions of our indomitable country, each add their own colors to the larger picture of our fight and hope for a better future. They are the stories of those who have been lost and betrayed in the fog of war, those devastated by cruelty and injustice. Yet through this fog shines a light — the light of faith, strength, and the resilience of the Ukrainian people that will guide us to Victory.

The performance “The Fog” is created in the mockumentary genre, which allows us to present the real voices of those who have endured incredible trials, and who, despite fear and loss, have kept their faith in freedom. These are interviews with real people who have stood firm in the face of tragedy, and whose personal stories reflect the painful journey of a nation towards self-determination.

Each of the 25 stories is a separate piece of a larger mosaic, where in the finale, all the fragments come together to form a single whole. The audience will understand why these stories symbolize resilience, endurance, and hope. Through these living narratives, we speak of the future — of the day when the fog of war will finally lift, and with it, the fears, despair, and pain will vanish.

This project is not just about theater — it is a cultural mission that, through art, reveals to the world the true cost of freedom. It tells the story of how a nation, ready to stand its ground to the end, fights for its right to exist. “Fog” inspires, unites, and gives us hope that, despite all the trials, the future will be bright.

August 3: “Azovstal. Voices” at the FAINE MISTO Festival

On August 3, in Lviv, as part of the large-scale FAINE MISTO festival, a special performance of the theatrical production “Azovstal. Voices” will take place. This performance, dedicated to the heroic defense of Mariupol, has already touched the hearts of thousands of viewers, not only in Ukraine but across Europe, and now the people of Lviv and the city’s guests will have the opportunity to join this incredibly important project.

This performance will be a charity event — all proceeds will go to support the Azov Regiment, which continues its fight for Ukraine’s freedom. The organizers invite everyone to attend and support the heroes who endured inhumane conditions during the defense of Mariupol. Donations will be collected during the event, giving each attendee the opportunity to contribute to aiding the defenders.

“Azovstal. Voices” is more than just a theatrical production. It is based on real stories and testimonies of the defenders of Azovstal who survived the siege and captivity. The actors skillfully convey the pain, hope, fear, and courage of those who held the defense of Mariupol despite all the hardships.

Marking Two Years of Captivity – “Azovstal. Voices” at SCENA 6 in Kyiv

On May 19, 2024, “Azovstal. Voices” was performed at SCENA 6 in the Dovzhenko Center in Kyiv, commemorating the second anniversary of the captivity of Mariupol’s defenders. The event drew a large audience, including displaced people from Mariupol, young people, families, soldiers from the Azov Regiment, and those who had personally survived captivity. It was an emotionally charged performance, forcing everyone to relive the pain and heroism of those who held the line at Azovstal.

The actors skillfully portrayed the drama faced by the people of Mariupol, caught in the midst of tragedy. Each story was filled with pain and despair, but also with the unbreakable hope that sustained the city’s defenders. The production deeply moved the audience, bringing many to tears and evoking genuine empathy for those still held in Russian captivity.

The performance had a particularly profound impact on those who had experienced captivity themselves. One audience member, who had been imprisoned for over a year, remarked: “This is more than just a play — it’s our story, one that must never be forgotten. “Azovstal. Voices” in Chernivtsi on January 26, 2024

On January 26, 2024, the powerful theatrical performance “Azovstal. Voices” took place at the Mykolaichuk Center in Chernivtsi. This cultural event became a profound occasion, drawing the attention of both local residents and guests to one of the most tragic yet heroic chapters of the war – the defense of Mariupol. The performance left a deep impact on the audience, stirring a wave of emotions and leaving no one indifferent.

The hall was filled with people eager to hear the stories of true heroes, those who fought to the end for their city at the Azovstal plant.
